La bronquitis es una inflamación de los conductos bronquiales, la parte del sistema respiratorio que conduce a los pulmones. La bronquitis aguda tiene un inicio repentino y por lo general aparece después de una infección respiratoria, como el resfriado, y puede ser causada por otros virus o bacterias. La infección inflama los conductos bronquiales, lo que causa síntomas como fiebre, tos, ulceración de la garganta, jadeo y producción de moco grueso amarillo. Si la bronquitis aguda se presenta debido a una infección bacterial se administran antibióticos para el tratamiento. Si la infección es viral, sólo pueden administrarse medicamentos para aliviar los síntomas. Aunque la bronquitis aguda es relativamente común, algunas personas son más propensas a ésta que otras.
