Fusión espinal

La cirugía para tratar la escoliosis se puede recomendar dependiendo de la severidad y la respuesta a otro tratamiento. La corrección quirúrgica involucra la corrección de la curvatura (aunque no toda) y la fusión de los huesos en dicha curvatura. Se colocan injertos óseos a través de la superficie expuesta de cada vértebra. Dichos injertos se regeneran, crecen dentro del hueso y fusionan las vértebras. Los huesos se mantienen en su sitio con una o dos varillas metálicas ajustadas con ganchos y tornillos, lo que también ayuda a brindar soporte a la fusión de las vértebras.
