Un diente se puede desportillar o fracturar durante un accidente o una mala caída. El diente que se desportilla o no se fractura mucho generalmente no es necesario manejarlo como un caso de emergencia; pero un diente que presente una fractura grave puede tener tejido nervioso expuesto dentro del mismo, en cuyo caso, es necesaria la atención inmediata para evitar infección, absceso y dolor.
