Es un tipo de cirugía para examinar o reparar los tejidos que se encuentran dentro o alrededor de la articulación del hombro. El procedimiento utiliza una pequeña cámara, llamada artroscopio, la cual se inserta a través de una incisión pequeña. Si el cirujano va a reparar la articulación, también se utilizan instrumentos quirúrgicos pequeños, como una máquina de afeitar de uso quirúrgico (shaver) para remover el tejido indeseable.
