La meningococcemia es una infección peligrosa que ocurre cuando el meningococo Neisseria meningitidis invade el torrente sanguíneo. Por lo general hay sangrado dentro de la piel (petequias y púrpura) y el tejido de esas áreas puede morir (tornarse necrótico o gangrenoso). Si el paciente sobrevive, las áreas sanan dejando cicatrices. Esta fotografía muestra muchas zonas de hemorragia y poco tejido muerto.
