Pityrosporum ovale
causa la tiña versicolor, condición que suele presentarse más a menudo en los adultos jóvenes. Si se la examina bajo la lámpara de Wood se ve una fluorescencia de color amarillo verdoso pálido; si se la examina con un preparado de hidróxido de potasio se ve la apariencia típica de "espagueti con albóndigas", con hifas y esporas. Las lesiones cutáneas son máculas con bordes muy pronunciados, ya sea hiper o hipopigmentadas, recubiertas de finas escamas. Las lesiones pequeñas y discretas con el tiempo pueden fundirse para cubrir áreas extensas del tronco.
