Cambios en la cara por el envejecimiento

Al envejecer, la capa externa de la piel (epidermis) se adelgaza, aun cuando el número de capas celulares permanece igual. A pesar de que disminuye el número de células que contiene pigmento (melanocitos), el resto de los melanocitos aumenta su tamaño. Por lo tanto, la piel envejecida luce más delgada y más transparente. Las manchas de la edad o manchas del hígado pueden aparecer en áreas expuestas al sol. Cambios en el tejido conectivo reducen la resistencia de la piel y su elasticidad. Esto se conoce como elastosis y es especialmente pronunciado en las áreas expuestas al sol.
