Entre las condiciones asociadas con la disfunción del nervio axilar se encuentran las siguientes: fractura del húmero (hueso del brazo superior), presión de férulas y mal uso de muletas. Otras causas pueden ser trastornos sistémicos que causan inflamación de los nervios o neuritis. Si la causa de la disfunción del nervio axilar puede ser identificada y tratada exitosamente, existe la posibilidad de lograr una recuperación total. El grado de la discapacidad varía pero, por lo general, el problema más grave que puede ocurrir es debilidad en el hombro.
