El cráneo se localiza antes de la columna vertebral y es una estructura ósea que encierra al encéfalo. Su función es la de proteger al encéfalo y proveer un sitio de adhesión para los músculos faciales. Las dos regiones del cráneo son la región craneal y la facial. La porción craneal es la parte del cráneo que aloja directamente el encéfalo y la porción facial comprende el resto de los huesos del cráneo.
