Anatomía de la muñeca
El nervio mediano viaja a través de un compartimiento de la muñeca llamado túnel carpiano. Los ligamentos que pasan transversalmente por el nervio no son muy flexibles. Cuando se inflama el compartimiento de la muñeca puede crearse una presión excesiva sobre algunas estructuras como los vasos sanguíneos y el nervio mediano. La presión excesiva puede restringir el flujo sanguíneo y causar daño al nervio. Los síntomas de la compresión producen dolor, pérdida de sensación y disminución en la función de la mano.
