Fontanelas grandes

Los huesos del cráneo no están unidos firmemente al nacer. Las suturas acumulan minerales gradualmente y se endurecen (este proceso se llama osificación), uniendo firmemente los huesos del cráneo entre sí. En un bebé, los espacios donde las suturas se entrecruzan pero no se tocan completamente se llaman el "punto blando", un área cubierta por una membrana también llamada fontanela. Las fontanelas permiten el crecimiento del cráneo durante el primer año del niño. Cuando los espacios de las fontanelas son más grandes de lo normal, es posible que se deba a problemas subyacentes como hidrocefalia.
