Cultivo pleural
Con una aguja se extrae una muestra de líquido pleural y se envía al laboratorio para ser evaluada. Se coloca la muestra en un recipiente que contiene un medio para el crecimiento del cultivo. Cuando las colonias de microorganismos han alcanzado el tamaño suficiente se pueden realizar una serie de pruebas bioquímicas para identificar la presencia de microorganismos específicos. Este examen se lleva a cabo cuando se sospecha de infección en los espacios pleurales o cuando una placa de rayos X del tórax revela una acumulación anormal de líquido pleural.
