El examen de Schirmers se utiliza para determinar si el ojo produce suficientes lágrimas para mantenerlo húmedo. Este examen se realiza colocando papel absorbente en el interior del párpado inferior del ojo. Después de unos minutos, se extrae el papel y se examina su contenido de humedad. También se utilizan gotas oftálmicas de fluoresceína para comprobar si las lágrimas pueden fluir a través del conducto lagrimal hasta la nariz.
