El resultado de la extirpación del tumor depende del tipo de tumor que se haya encontrado. Si el tumor es benigno (ya sea aspirado con aguja o extirpado) no se requiere ningún tratamiento posterior. Si el tumor es maligno, el resultado depende del grado de diseminación que éste haya alcanzado.
Además de la cirugía, se puede usar la radioterapia. En ciertos casos de tumores malignos, la tumorectomía, seguida de la terapia de radiación, es tan efectiva como la mastectomía radical. Generalmente, la tumorectomía no requiere un reemplazo de seno (prótesis).
