Los mejores candidatos para un agrandamiento del mentón o genioplastia son pacientes con mentón incompleto o retraído (microgenia), pero con una mordida normal. Las expectativas de verse y sentirse mejor después de una cirugía deben analizarse con el cirujano plástico antes de cualquier intervención quirúrgica, teniendo en cuenta que el resultado deseado es el mejoramiento, no la perfección.

El perfil facial puede equilibrarse alargando el mentón con relación a la nariz. La genioplastia reconstructiva para corregir la disfunción de la mordida puede realizarse conjuntamente con la cirugía del maxilar.
