La dilatación y legrado es un procedimiento quirúrgico definitivamente menor, el cual se puede realizar en un hospital o clínica utilizando anestesia general o local. El médico mantendrá la cavidad vaginal abierta con un espéculo y puede anestesiar la abertura del útero (cuello uterino). Se utiliza una varilla metálica para dilatar el canal cervical. Luego se pasa una cureta (asa metálica en el extremo de un mango delgado y largo). El médico raspará la capa interna del útero (endometrio) y recolectará tejido para su análisis.
