El cáncer de mama comienza en el seno y se extiende hacia los ganglios linfáticos que se encuentran debajo del brazo, en la axila. Cuando se detecta la presencia de un tumor canceroso en el seno, que aún no se ha expandido más allá de los ganglios de la axila a otras partes del cuerpo, generalmente se extirpa mediante una intervención quirúrgica.

Además de la cirugía, se puede usar la radioterapia. En ciertos casos de tumores malignos, la tumorectomía, seguida de la terapia de radiación, es tan efectiva como la mastectomía radical. Generalmente, la tumorectomía no requiere un reemplazo de seno (prótesis).
