El resultado de la cirugía varía de acuerdo con la evolución de la enfermedad misma, como también sucede con el curso y la duración del período de recuperación. Por lo general, la laparotomía exploratoria se realiza debido a lesiones, dolor abdominal severo de causa desconocida, obstrucción intestinal, enfermedades inflamatorias como la apendicitis y la diverticulitis y el cáncer de cualquiera de los órganos abdominales.
