La ventaja de la fijación interna es que permite, por lo general, la movilización temprana y una consolidación más rápida del hueso. No es necesario ni recomendable, por motivo alguno, retirar el aparato de fijación interna, a menos que cause problemas. El pronóstico a largo plazo es excelente. El tiempo de permanencia en el hospital depende de diversos factores tales como la condición del hueso, la presencia de infección, el estado de irrigación sanguínea y nerviosa y la presencia de otras lesiones. Los huesos de los niños se consolidan rápidamente, por lo general, en seis semanas.
