El cáncer cervical, uno de los cánceres más comunes en las mujeres, afecta el tejido epitelial del cuello uterino. El examen de Papanicolaou es el procedimiento de cribaje (búsqueda) utilizado para detectar el cáncer cervical de forma temprana.
El cáncer cervical limitado o incipiente (carcinoma in situ o neoplasia intraepitelial cervical o displasia) requiere de un tratamiento con terapia de ablación, generalmente en forma de crioterapia cervical o de un procedimiento más extenso llamado conización, con el cual se extirpa una mayor cantidad de tejido.
