La operación se practica bajo anestesia general. El cirujano ortopédico hace una incisión sobre la rodilla afectada. Se aparta la rótula (patella) y se lijan las cabezas del fémur y de la tibia para eliminar cualquier parte áspera con el fin de permitir una mejor adhesión de la prótesis. Las dos partes de la prótesis se implantan en el fémur y la tibia por medio de un cemento especial para soldar huesos.
