Se extrae la médula ósea de la parte superior del hueso de la cadera (la cresta ilíaca), mientras el paciente se encuentra despierto y sin sentir dolor (bajo anestesia local). Inmediatamente se filtra, trata y trasplanta la médula ósea. Otras veces, ésta se congela y se guarda para su uso posterior. Luego, se transfunde (inyecta) la médula ósea a través de una vena (vía intravenosa). La médula ósea inyectada retorna por sí sola, de manera natural, hasta las cavidades óseas pre-establecidas, en donde crece rápidamente para reemplazar a la antigua médula ósea.
