El otorrinolaringólogo abre la boca del paciente, el cual se encuentra bajo anestesia general, y hala la lengua hacia adelante para descubrir las amígdalas; a continuación las sujeta desde la parte de atrás de la garganta y las corta para eliminarlas. El sangrado se controla y, en la mayoría de los casos, el corte se cura por sí solo de forma natural y sin necesidad de puntos de sutura.
