Se hace una incisión en el cuello, por encima de la arteria carótida obstruida, mientras el paciente se encuentra profundamente dormido y sin sentir dolor. Se inserta una sonda por encima y por debajo de la obstrucción para desviar el flujo sanguíneo.
La grasa y las acumulaciones de colesterol son extraídas de la arteria carótida.
Se cose (sutura) la arteria para cerrarla, se retira la sonda y se cierra la incisión.
