La técnica que se usa con más frecuencia para reparar los desprendimientos de retina se llama cierre esclerótico.
Antes de realizar el procedimiento de cierre esclerótico se deben suturar las roturas y desgarramientos que tenga la retina, para lo cual existen dos métodos. La criopexia, uno de ellos, utiliza una sonda muy fría (criotransductor). Esto produce una inflamación que conlleva a la formación de una cicatriz, la cual adhiere la retina al tejido subyacente.
