La acalasia es un desorden que provoca que el esfínter esofágico inferior no se relaje en el momento en que el alimento pasa del esófago al estómago. Como resultado, el esófago se dilata y se llena de alimento. Esto provoca que el alimento llegue muy lentamente al estómago.

Con mucha frecuencia, esta enfermedad viene acompañada de dolor en el pecho durante la ingestión de alimentos, pérdida de peso y regurgitación de alimento. El esófago inferior se distiende debido a que tanto los alimentos como los líquidos no pueden llegar al estómago.
