La extirpación del seno (mastectomía) se realiza, con mayor frecuencia, debido al cáncer de mama. Ocasionalmente, se realizan mastectomías bilaterales profilácticas en pacientes con una marcada historia familiar de cáncer de mama y con anormalidades genéticas que las predisponen a contraerlo. La mastectomía profiláctica se realiza en estos casos para prevenir el cáncer de mama.
