La formación de un coágulo de sangre en las venas se llama trombosis venosa. La trombosis venosa comúnmente se forma en las venas de las piernas. Los factores de riesgo para la trombosis venosa son, entre otros, un prolongado reposo en cama o inmovilización, que se da debido, entre otras cosas, a cirugía, a cáncer o a terapia con estrógenos.
