La trombosis venosa de las piernas es diagnosticada por ultrasonido. El tratamiento normalmente involucra medicamentos anticoagulantes. Dos medicamentos comunes son la heparina y el coumadin.

Si los pacientes no pueden tomar medicamentos anticoagulantes (pacientes con un historial de derrames cerebrales o hemorragias), se pone un filtro en la vena grande que va de la pierna al corazón para recoger cualquier coágulo que pueda emigrar hacia él. Estos filtros pueden insertarse a través de un catéter que es introducido en las venas de la ingle.
