Los cálculos vesicales generalmente se forman en la vesícula y algunas veces pasan de la vesícula al conducto biliar común, obstruyendo el flujo de bilis al duodeno, lo cual puede producir una enfermedad adicional. Asimismo, los tumores del pancreas y el duodeno pueden obstruir el conducto biliar, impidiendo también el flujo de bilis al duodeno.
