La ERCP es una técnica en la cual se pasa un endoscopio con una cámara en su extremo a través del esófago y el estómago hasta el duodeno con el fin de poder observar allí la entrada del conducto biliar común. Luego, el cirujano puede pasar un instrumento especial colocado en el extremo del endoscopio hasta el conducto biliar común a medida que éste entra en el duodeno e inyecta un medio de contraste a través de dicho instrumento para permitir la visualización de los cálculos por medio de rayos X.
