Cuando el esfínter esofágico inferior no funciona apropiadamente, el ácido y la comida pueden devolverse del estómago hacia el esófago, lo cual puede ocasionar dolor (acidez) y lesiones en la parte inferior del esófago.

A su vez, estas lesiones pueden ocasionar estrechez (estrangulación) del esófago y, con el tiempo, cáncer de esófago. A menudo, el mal funcionamiento del esfínter esofágico inferior está asociado a una hernia hiatal en la que la parte inferior del esófago y la parte superior del estómago se deslizan hacia el tórax en dirección ascendente.
