Para casos de emergencia, muchos médicos prefieren utilizar anestesia general para dormir a la paciente, debido a que se puede administrar rápidamente y hace efecto casi de inmediato. Cuando la cesárea es programada, el médico puede ordenar la anestesia regional (espinal o epidural), con la cual se insensibiliza únicamente la porción inferior del cuerpo.
