Los espaciadores (también denominados cámaras de retención) funcionan con el inhalador de dosis medidas para administrar el medicamento inhalado de manera más fácil y efectiva y pueden reducir los efectos secundarios.

Los espaciadores retienen la "descarga" de medicina entre la persona y el inhalador de dosis medidas, de manera que ésta pueda inhalarla lentamente y de manera más completa. Como resultado, mayor cantidad de medicina llega a las vías aéreas.
