Las vías respiratorias de una persona que se está ahogando pueden estar completa o parcialmente obstruidas. Una obstrucción completa es una situación médica de emergencia y una obstrucción parcial se puede convertir en una situación potencialmente mortal si la persona pierde la capacidad de inhalar y exhalar lo suficiente. Sin oxígeno, se puede presentar daño permanente al cerebro en tan sólo 4 minutos. Los primeros auxilios rápidos en caso de ahogamiento pueden salvar una vida.

La señal universal de angustia por causa de ahogamiento es tomarse la garganta con una o ambas manos.

NO se deben administrar los primeros auxilios si la persona está tosiendo vigorosamente y es capaz de hablar, ya que una tos fuerte puede desalojar el objeto espontáneamente.
