Joanne M. Waeltermann, M.D.

Joanne Waelterman, M.D. Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology

Dr. Waeltermann is a board-certified pediatric ophthalmologist. She is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She is also on the consulting staff of Howard County General Hospital and on the staffs of Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Healthsouth St. Agnes Surgery Center. In addition, she is chief of pediatric ophthalmology at St. Agnes Hospital, where she specializes in the eye problems of premature infants. She is an instructor at Maryland General Hospital. She has a private practice in Catonsville.

Dr. Waeltermann graduated from the University of Detroit (B.S., Summa Cum Laude) and Wayne State University School of Medicine (M.D.). She interned at the Sinai Hospital of Detroit in internal medicine, where she completed a residency in ophthalmology and served as chief resident in 1984. She completed her training by doing a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and is board certified by the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.

Though she prefers treating humans, she was also a consultant to the National Aquarium in Baltimore for fish eye problems. She is a lecturer at a number of area teaching hospitals and has published 13 papers in scientific journals, including eye care and treatment in babies and children, as well as genetic eye problems.
