Employees are embracing the fitness and wellness programs at UMMC, and the American Heart Association (AHA) has recognized the Medical Center for the second straignt year -- 2008 and 2009 -- with an award for its efforts to promote the health of employees.
The AHA has again awarded the Medical Center with the Start! Fit-Friendly Company Gold Level Award in 2009. The AHA award reads:
"As a Gold Level Award recipient, you have not only recognized the importance of a healthy workplace for your employees but have taken important steps to create a culture of physical activity in the workplace. Promoting a wellness culture by providing support to employees and implementing physical, nutritional, and cultural changes are extraordinary efforts, and we commend you and your employees."
The Medical Center is recognized on the AHA's Start! Web site, and in an advertising section the AHA placed in the Sept. 28 issue of Forbes magazine.
"We are proud to be recognized as an employer with strong investments in the health of our employees," says Melissa Frisch, MD, MPH, medical director of employee health and safety.
"This recognition will enhance our ability to continue attracting highly qualified staff, even in the face of shortages in certain health care professions," says R. Keith Allen, senior vice president for human resources. "But more importantly, this encourages all of us who work at UMMC to continue to value our own health and well-being."
