The University of Maryland Medical Center is recognized among the nation's best hospitals in nine specialty areas in the U.S. News & World Report's 2011 "Best Hospitals" list. U.S. News & World Report evaluated approximately 5,000 medical centers across the United States to rank the top 50 in 16 different adult specialties from cancer to urology. Less than 3 percent (140) of all U.S. hospitals are included in the rankings, which rely on such data as death rates, procedure volume and ratio of nurses to patients.

In addition, UMMC is listed as "high-performing" in three other specialties, listed below. These means these specialties were not in the top 50, but scored in the top 25 percent nationally.
It is also ranked #2 in the Baltimore metro area.
