The Section for Fetal Therapy, under the direction of Dr. Ahmet Baschat, is one of a handful of programs in the nation that offers the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic options for medical and surgical conditions of the unborn child. We approach invasive fetal management in the tradition of the maternal-fetal medicine specialist, using minimally invasive techniques and sonofetoscopy.

Recognizing the importance of integrated care, we use a variety of approaches including:

Multidimensional ultrasound
Doppler flow studies
2 and 3-D Fetal Echocardiography
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Invasive diagnostic testing

The University of Maryland has a rich tradition for invasive fetal treatment, having successfully performed minimally invasive fetal surgical interventions for well over a decade. Dean E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A. of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, is the U.S. pioneer for embryo/fetoscopy -- a procedure during pregnancy that allows a doctor to see the fetus directly through a thin, flexible scope.
