Division of General and Oncologic Surgery

About Us

University of Maryland Division of General and Oncologic Surgery is known as a leader in performing state-of-the-art minimally invasive procedures for a wide array of diseases. These include disorders of the endocrine system and gastrointestinal tract, hernia repair, bariatric surgery and much more. Minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery, which our surgeons now use for most operations, requires much smaller incisions than traditional surgery. This makes operations safer and significantly reduces patients' hospital stays and recovery times.

It's fitting that these cutting-edge procedures are being performed in one of the nation's most technologically advanced surgical facilities. The University of Maryland Medical Center opened 19 new operating rooms in May of 2003. Called the "OR of the Future", they combine the most advanced technology and videoscopic and other communications equipment with information technology in order to enhance patient safety and operational efficiency. See what makes these 19 new operating rooms special, and take a tour of our new OR.

University of Maryland Division of General and Oncologic Surgery physicians performed many of the state's first laparoscopic procedures, including videoscopic cholecystectomy, pelvic lymph node dissection, vagotomy, hernia repair, colon resection, splenectomy and nephrectomy.

These sort of pioneering advances will continue under the leadership of Adrian Park, M.D., a nationally known laparoscopic surgery expert who is the chief of general surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center and professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Park and his team are working on developing and applying new approaches and technologies in minimally invasive surgery, with such research helping to make surgery safer and easier for patients in the years to come.

As an academic medical center, all of our physicians are faculty members at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. In addition to treating patients, we train both medical students and practicing surgeons in our state-of-the-art teaching laboratory, which includes a 3-D minimally invasive surgery training environment that provides feedback and real-time performance evaluation.

Our educational mission extends to our patients as well. It's important to us that our patients are informed patients. Through personal interaction, this Web site and handouts, we try to educate patients about the procedures they will undergo in terms they can understand.

Our physicians' vast surgical expertise and use of minimally invasive techniques, combined with the resources of the University of Maryland Medical Center, distinguish us as a first-rate, comprehensive center of excellence.
