In June of 2006, William Davis underwent a laparoscopic repair of an incisional and umbilical hernia at the University of Maryland Medical Center. The surgery was performed by Dr. Scott Roth, co-director of the University of Maryland Hernia Center and an assistant professor of surgery at the UM School of Medicine. Davis says he had an “excellent result.” Read his story below.
Why did you decide to have surgery?
Six years ago I had an open gallbladder removal surgery at another hospital. In 2004 I noticed a bulge in the incision. I had an incisional and umbilical hernia caused by the incision where I had my surgery. I never had any symptoms except for an unsightly bulge in upper abdomen on my right side. But it could have developed into a problem in the future so I thought it should be taken care of.
How did find out about University of Maryland?
My wife went online and found Dr. Roth and then we made an appointment in early June, 2006. We went to find out what he would suggest. Dr. Roth suggested having the hernia repaired laparoscopically; he felt he could repair it that way.
When did you have your surgery?
I had a laparoscopic repair of the incisional hernia as well as an umbilical hernia repair with Dr. Roth on June 26, 2006 with an excellent result. Everything worked out well. I had a very good impression of the doctors and nurses at the Medical Center.
What was your recovery like?
It went well, better than I would have expected. I spent two nights in the hospital, and there were no problems. I had a little pain but otherwise it went smoothly. I never took any pain medication. I was able to walk the whole time. I have no problems now -- I feel fine.
What did you think about the facilities/your hospital room?
Very good. I was the first person in the new wing (the Surgical Acute Care Unit) so my room was new. All of the rooms on the unit were private rooms, and were just remodeled. My room looked out over downtown Baltimore. My wife actually stayed the first night; the room had a large chair that pulled out into a bed. They were very nice rooms.
What is your opinion of Dr. Roth?
I thought he was excellent. I can’t say enough about him. He’s a very personable guy. I liked everything about him. He was very confident. Everything really worked out the way he explained it from the beginning. I was very confident when I went in for surgery. I would recommend Dr. Roth to others.
