University of Maryland General Surgeons treat an array of diseases, including disorders of the endocrine system, gastrointestinal tract and hepatobiliary tree, and participate in the comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation and therapy of a range of cancers. Many of the state's first laparoscopic procedures were performed by UM General Surgeons, including laparoscopic cholecystectomy, pelvic lymph node dissection, vagotomy (also first in the U.S.), thoracoscopic lung resection, hernia repair, colon resection, splenectomy and nephrectomy.
