Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship

Qualifications and Application Process

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine, Baltimore welcomes applications for our three-year comprehensive clinical fellowship program leading to Board eligibility in the subspecialty of Gastroenterology. Applicants must be Board eligible in Internal Medicine prior to starting the Fellowship in Gastroenterology, which usually requires that the applicant is either currently enrolled in and will have completed a three-year residency in an approved training program in Internal Medicine in the United States prior to fellowship. Applicants training in programs that are not associated with a major University program in the United States are rarely accepted.

We will be interviewing for positions beginning in July 2009. ERAS will be used for applications to our program for fellowship. For more information, contact ERAS. We will also be participating in the NRMP match for 2009. You must contact the NRMP for detailed information and enrollment in the match. The schedule for the application process is as follows:

July 1, 2007 MyERAS Web site opens to applicants to begin working on their applications.
November 15, 2007 Applicants can electronically apply (through ERAS) to programs of their choice.
December 1, 2007 Programs can access ERAS to download applications submitted to them.
January - April 2008 Programs interview fellowship applicants.
April 9, 2008 Rank order list opens. Applicants and programs may begin their rank order list.
June 4, 2008 Rank order list due to NRMP from programs and applicants.
June 18, 2008 MATCH DAY! Applicants and programs are notified of Match results for positions to begin July 2009.

You will have the opportunity to submit your application to the University of Maryland Program, Combined University of Maryland/NIH Scholars Program, or both through the NRMP web site. Our programs use the following NRMP program numbers:

The following materials must be submitted through ERAS no later than January 31:

  1. ERAS application
  2. Curriculum vitae (ERAS format is acceptable)
  3. Personal statement
  4. Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) or "Dean's letter"
  5. Three letters of recommendation, preferably including one from the Chair of the Department of Medicine or Residency Program Director
  6. Medical school transcript
  7. USMLE Step 1 scores
  8. USMLE Step 2 scores
  9. Photograph
  10. Your email address

If you are an International Medical Graduate, please note the following requirements. Further information about visas is available on our GME web site.

  1. Valid ECFMG certificate, including successful completion of the CSA.

  2. The University of Maryland Medical Center adheres to the standards and guidelines for the employment of non-immigrants as established by federal immigration laws and the U.S. Department of Labor. Non-immigrant alien residents or fellows will be sponsored under the J-1 visa program unless they have graduated from an accredited U.S. medical school. If they have graduated from an accredited U.S. medical school, non-immigrant alien residents and fellows may be eligible for sponsorship under the H-1B visa program.

  3. Board eligibility in Internal Medicine prior to starting the Fellowship in Gastroenterology, which usually requires current enrollment or completion of a three-year residency in an approved training program in Internal Medicine in the United States prior to fellowship.

  4. Although specific minimum USMLE scores are not required for the residency program, it is highly desirable to have USMLE scores over 215 for all applicants. Applicants with failing USMLE scores will not be granted interviews.
