Awards and Honors
Because the University of Maryland Medical Center recognizes that sustaining a healthy environment
is essential to maintaining both personal and public health, it has committed itself to becoming
a leader in the statewide movement to adopt more environmentally sound practices. The awards and
honors below showcase not only the success of the Medical Center's Green Team, but also the
dedication our employees put forth for this cause.
- UMMC Nurse Receives Environmental Health Award

UMMC Sustainability Manager Denise Choiniere received the first annual Nursing Leadership in Environmental Health Award from Maryland Hospitals for a Healthy Environment at their annual Environmental Excellence in Health Care Conference. Choiniere was recognized for spearheading environmental initiatives at UMMC, including a hazardous pharmaceutical waste management program, Earth Day events, and a weekly farmers' market.
- UMMC Wins National Environmental Excellence Award from Practice Greenhealth

Practice Greenhealth, an organization of dedicated to environmentally responsible practices at large health care facilities,
awarded UMMC a "Partner for Change, with Distinction, Award." UMMC staff accepted the award in April at the annual global
conference, CleanMed2011, in Phoenix, Arizona. The Medical Center has previously won the "Partner for Change Award."
This year, the award comes "with distinction" - a higher level that recognizes a greater level of action and results.
- UMMC Receives 2010 Trailblazer Award

The University of Maryland Medical Center is the recipient of a 2010 Trailblazer Award from Maryland Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (MDH2E). The award, which was presented to the Medical Center at the MDH2E annual conference on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, recognizes the innovativeness the Medical Center's new pharmaceutical waste program.
- UMMC Wins Two Awards for Environmental Excellence from Practice Greenhealth

UMMC was presented with two awards from Practice
Greenhealth, a national membership organization for health care facilities committed to
environmentally responsible operations. The "Partner for Change Award" was
presented to the Medical Center in honor of its efforts to reduce waste, eliminate mercury and
prevent pollution in a health care environment. The "Making Medicine Mercury-Free
Award" was also presented to the Medical Center to recognize its mercury-free
management, purchasing policies and recycling programs.
- UMMC Receives 2009 Trailblazer Award from the Environmental Protection Agency

The Environmental Protection Agency presented the 2009
Trailblazer Award to the University of Maryland Medical Center in recognition of its
establishment of a University
Farmers' Market. This award is presented to hospitals in the region that have served as
models and shown leadership in advancing sustainability practices in their daily
operations.
