Sustainability Manager Denise Choiniere Celebrates "Under the Big Top" with Fellow Green Team Members.
On May 13, 2010, UMMC held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Phase IV facility. Medical Center employees celebrated after the ceremony with a carnival-themed "Under the Big Top" extravaganza, and the Green Team was invited to participate.
As a way to keep consistent with the carnival theme, the Green Team decided to host a "Waste Separation Ball Toss." Green Team members labeled plastic balls with different types of waste, including:

The playing field was set up with a red container for infectious waste, a recycling container, a solid waste container and a black pharmaceutical waste container and players were asked to toss each ball into the proper waste receptacle. Players who were able to toss three balls into the proper container won either a "Green on Greene Street" reusable grocery bag or a stainless steel water bottle.
Participants waiting in line also had the option of participating in a four-question quiz about environmental stewardship. Those who scored 100% were also awarded a prize.
Not only were UMMC employees having fun, they were learning about the new waste separation program and the environment. The line was long, but many found it worth the wait!
