The University of Maryland Medical Center, in partnership with the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Catholic Relief Services, has been sending teams of medical volunteers to Haiti since shortly after the disastrous earthquake there on January 12.
Editor’s Note: Amanda Frye, a nurse at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois, was a member of the University of Maryland’s 21st team to go to Haiti to provide medical care since the devastating earthquake in January.
I just returned home from Haiti Sunday. I joined team 21 last week and I can’t express enough gratitude for including me in such a wonderful experience. Dr. Gens and the rest of the team were phenomenal. I can only hope that I will get the opportunity to contribute to your program again soon.
In this seven-minute video, David Gens, M.D., F.A.C.S., an associate professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and trauma surgeon with the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, reflects upon his memories after participating in one of the Haiti relief missions sponsored by the University of Maryland Medical Center. He discusses his role as a general surgeon during the relief mission, the challenges faced by his team upon arriving in Haiti, and his impressions of the Haitian medical students who assisted him during his work.
In this seven-minute video, Marcus Sciadini, M.D., an assistant professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and orthopaedic trauma surgeon at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, talks about his role as a member of the first team sent to Haiti from the University of Maryland Medical Center as part of its ongoing earthquake relief mission. He discusses the challenges faced by the team upon arrival in the devastated country as well as his lasting impressions of both his fellow team members and the patients he treated during his stay.
So how am I … the altered sense of reality is at times a little overwhelming but manageable. It is funny how things here at home, with no relation to Haiti, give me the feeling of being on the streets of Port-au-Prince. The most surprising of these things so far has been the snow. The mounds that are jutting into the small side streets that cause one car to pause and allow another car to pass first are much like the road conditions getting around PaP.
