The Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit is a 21-bed unit that provides care to adult patients requiring pre- and post-operative care for cardiac surgical conditions. Care in this unit is provided on a continuous 24-hour basis and is available for critically ill patients requiring intensive care (ICU) as well as patients requiring intermediate care (IMC). The CSICU average daily census is 19 patients.
Patient care coordination and satisfaction are very important to staff members of the CSICU. A critical care intensivist rounds daily with other care providers including the physician, nurse practitioner, nurse, pharmacist, nutritionist, and social worker. A case manager provides Monday-Friday coordination for all cardiothoracic surgery patients, focusing on discharge planning, high-risk patient care coordination, and third-party payor communication.
Patient/family satisfaction surveys are conducted by telephone following discharge. In addition, prior to transfer, patients are asked to complete a unit-based satisfaction survey. The results of the surveys are discussed with the staff, and strategies for improvement are developed based on the perceived needs of patients.
