Dr. Mandeep Mehra's Major Research Accomplishments

Listed below are some of the major research accomplishments of Dr. Mandeep Mehra, who is head of cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center and chief of the division of cardiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Developed intravascular ultrasound analysis for cardiac allograft vasculopathy in heart transplantation -- described natural history, IVUS morphology, risk markers and treatment options.

Performed the ONLY worldwide experience with intracoronary angioscopy in characterizing coronary plaques in heart transplantation.

Developed new immunosuppression approaches to enhance survival in African-American heart transplant recipients.

Led multicenter studies in developing molecular gene expression diagnostics for detection of rejection and prediction of outcomes in heart transplantation.

Investigated the new biomarker, BNP, in heart transplantation -- correlated it with hemodynamics, coronary artery disease post transplant and survival.

Discovered that obesity is associated with circulating BNP insufficiency in heart failure.

Investigated refinements to the interpretation of cardiopulmonary stress testing in heart failure.

Currently spearheading national trials as PI or steering committee member for improving outpatient outcomes in heart failure (IMPROVE HF), long-term use of exogenous natriuretic peptiedes in patients awaiting heart transplantation (TMAC) and calcineurin sparing strategies in heart transplantation (Save the nephron study group in heart transplantation).
