Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy (PTE)

Why choose University Maryland Medical Center for PTE?

University of Maryland physicians are among the nation’s leading experts in pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary thromboendartectomy (PTE) is a very delicate procedure not practiced in many places -- no other medical center in Baltimore or the surrounding Washington D.C. area offers it as a treatment option.

Dr. Bartley Griffith, an internationally-known and respected cardiac surgeon, has performed PTE procedures over the last seven years with very successful results.

Dr. Griffith has pioneered procedures ranging from heart and lung transplants, double lung transplants, heart tumor removal, insertion of heart pumps and thoracic aortic aneurysm repair. His focus is providing the best possible care for the patient with unique and cutting-edge techniques that decrease the amount of time required for hospital stays, patient recovery and return to normal activities.

He works closely with the medical center’s heart failure team and Dr. Myung Park, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Program, as well as specially trained nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, pharmacists and social workers. This team approach allows UMMC to provide pulmonary hypertension patients with diagnostic and treatment services that are available at only a handful of other hospitals nationwide.
