Ventricular Assist Device Program

The Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) program offers patients a wide variety of potentially life-saving treatment options for end-stage heart disease. Whether as a "bridge to transplant" or as definitive "destination therapy", cardiac surgeons and cardiologists at the Maryland Heart Center work with a team of biomedical engineers, nurse practitioners and other specialists to offer the best available option for each patient.

The VAD team includes many of the same health care professionals as the transplant team, and interacts closely to provide consistent and skilled care to this unique group of patients from initial evaluation through close follow-up care as long as the device is required.
