Hospice Care Statistics

According to the National Association for Home Care:

There are more than 2,200 hospices participating in the Medicare program in the US, with an additional 400 volunteer hospices.
In 1998, almost 540,000 patients received hospice care through Medicare or Medicaid programs.
Most hospice patients are age 65 or older. Almost as many males as females are hospice patients, and most hospice patients are married.
The most common terminal illnesses among hospice patients is lung cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer.
